Pineland Trail Running Festival May 29, 2015

Oh Pineland. Three years in a row I’ve gotten my ass kicked by you.

1.  40°, raining, muddy

2.  Donated blood and never recovered

3.  Tick bite medicine had me sick all week.

Why do I keep torturing myself with you?

Another long, long break :-( March 24, 2015

. . . And I realized that I started to write instead of actually running!  So, I got in another C25K day on the treadmill.  Maine has been tough.  I was doing okay, and had signed up for the MDI Marathon, then all hell broke loose.  I had major house repairs, then had to spend two weeks in Boston for school.  When I came back I went on a serious job search, found a new job, and, of course, had no time.  I just got back on the treadmill about a month ago (we are still below freezing every day, and the wind is ridiculous) and have been working through the program yet again. :-(. I have found some fabulous places to run in Maine though, and will hopefully be able to update this more often with some pictures.  I love looking at my old pictures from Philly.  🙂

I just started week four, and it takes so much effort to get back into running.  I can’t believe that last July I could run 15 miles for fun, and now I struggle with C25K on a treadmill.  I’m hoping my progress will be exponential!

First Four Mile Run in a Year! May 9, 2012

Filed under: Uncategorized — melissa @ 3:06 pm

My running has been so off and on due to a couple injuries, and then being in ME during April with absolutely no time to run, that I’m almost starting over.  The two races I mentioned in the previous post ended up being just a waste of my money as I couldn’t work out the timing.

Anyway, I took my dog for the run with me yesterday.  We went down to Forbidden drive, which was pretty empty because of a light rain.  I have to say, it was awesome running in the rain!  I miss that.  Of course, I got quite a few comments on my dog, because she’s ultra cool.  🙂

It was four miles of torture.  Having only run on the treadmill, and once or twice on the flat, flat tow path, even the gentle hills of Forbidden Drive were too much!  I actually stopped three or four times to walk for a minute or so.  It ended up taking me 56 minutes, which I have to say was impressive.  I thought I took much longer than that.  I guess time seems to slow down when you are suffering.  😦  Thankfully I read my Pinterest running inspiration board before I left, and kept a lot of it in mind to call on when I didn’t think I could run any longer.  Every mile sucked, but if I had to choose the one that sucked the least I guess it was mile three to four.  Normally it takes me a good 1.5 miles to warm up, so it makes sense.

Oddly, my situation has done a 180.  When I started running, I felt I had the physical strength, but not the cardio ability.  During this run, I had no cardio/breathing issues, but my whole body felt beat.  I was tempted to stop because I didn’t want to push myself too much, but if I don’t I’ll never be ready for the June half.

I also ran through a lot of sharp rocks (so annoying), and hurt my heel on one of them.  I can walk on it today, so hopefully it will be okay for tomorrow’s four mile run.

Goals needed . . . April 3, 2012

I finally started running again in Dec/Jan, and then broke my stupid big toe at the end of February. The stars are just not aligned for running and me.

I started running again at the beginning of March, and have been fairly faithful to the treadmill. I realized that if I don’t have a goal, I don’t run. I signed up for a 5k in NH on Earth Day — at Stonyfield Farms. That should be lots of fun.

I got a training plan for a half marathon (a free plan from Runner’s World), marked it off in my calendar, and then looked for a half on appropriate day according to the plan — June 16th. I searched for a half, and came up with the Half Sauer/Half Braut Half Marathon in Philadelphia. It’s along a river, so hopefully it will be nice. You get free beer at the end, so I have to run until close to noon. 🙂 Don’t want to be drinking at 10:00 in the morning!

As part of the plan, I actually went running outside today and took my dog. She loves running. It was pretty hot out, but the tow path I run on has been improved so much I couldn’t believe it. It was a pretty poor run in terms of time and distance (2 miles/27 min. YIKES!), but in terms of sun, the tow path, and generally feeling great, it was the best run I’ve had in a long time.

Last but not least, RIP Caballo Blanco. It’s a sad day for runners everywhere. Your life ended much too soon.

I haven’t given up December 12, 2011

So it’s been forever, and I really haven’t been running. The summer was ridiculous. Even with the pool it was way too hot to run. I started my doctoral program in September, when it finally started to cool down, but between working full time and taking full time doctoral classes I just didn’t have time to run. My classes just ended, so for the past couple weeks I’ve been hitting the treadmill. Today I will do W5D3 of C25K.

I suck May 28, 2011

Yep. I got so caught up in all the different issues and plans I had, that I completely forgot about running. That’s what happens when I don’t make a habit of it.

I will start again next week. I will have my little pool by then, so I can cool off enough to feel like — hey, it’s not too hot to go running! Then, when I get back dying from the heat, I can get right in the pool to cool off. Well, that’s the plan anyway. We’ll see how it goes.

I ran thirty minutes on the treadmill today. I hope once I get on a regular schedule I get in shape faster than I did when I started from scratch. While I was watching the clock (!), I realized that I had barely run a mile, and I ran a half marathon about six months ago! I’m only counting the Maine Marathon, because Disney was waaaay too crowded to count.

I’ll run again on Tuesday, but then there’s a problem. I am leaving from work on Thursday and catching a train, and I won’t be back until midnight on Sunday. I’m not going to be able to run my D3. I guess I could run Monday to finish W1, then run W, F, S to finish W2. After that, I would be on track with W3 being T, Th, and Sunday. I don’t really like running every other day, but hopefully I’ll feel okay.

It did feel good to run again, even if it was on a treadmill.
